Conference "Prospects of Ukraine’s seed branch development as a part of integration processes of world economy"

Dr. Marcel Bruins

Mr. Bruins completed his studies in plant breeding and plant pathology at the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands in 1989.

Based on the research he did in Fusarium resistance in wheat at Plant Research International, he was awarded a PhD in 1998.

After that he was responsible for the patent portfolio of a large public research institute for a number of years and then worked in Rotterdam at the Innovation Center for Inventions where he was active in the commercial aspects of agricultural and biotechnology inventions.

In 1998 he joined the breeding company Seminis Vegetable Seeds where he was manager Plant Variety Protection WW but also worked on other aspects of intellectual property, like patents and trademarks. During this period he was a member of several international committees in organizations like the European Seed Association, the Dutch Seed Association and the International Seed Federation (ISF). He has been chairing several of these committees.

Marcel Bruins was hired at ISF for the position of Secretary General in 2007.

Sergey Feofilov

general director of UkrAgroConsult, Ph.D. in Economics (1985). Since 1981-1984 – Senior Economist at Ukrainian Republican Office of the State bank, was involved in teaching activities. Since 1987-1991 he worked as a trader, later deputy director of the trade union “Ukrimpex”.

In 1992, Sergey Feofilov became head of the foreign economic activities’ department of Ukrneftegazstroy, since 1992-1994 he became general director of government consulting company UPVE. He is the founder of the first analytical center “UkrAgroConsult” specializing in agricultural sector of Ukraine and Black Sea region countries.

 

Garlich von Essen

Secretary General, European Seed Association

Garlich is German and studied agriculture and economics at the University of Göttingen where he graduated in 1990. He started his professional career in the European Commission’s Directorate General for Agriculture before taking a scholarship at the College of Europe in Bruges, graduating in administrative and political sciences. From 1994 to 1999 he worked in the European Parliament where, next to agricultural and structural policy, he worked specifically on the EU’s R&D policy and funding instruments. Joining the European seed industry in 1999 as Director Public Affairs, he became Secretary General of ESA 2004.

In ESA, Garlich takes responsibility for the overall management of the association and its staff, for the development of strategic policy campaigns on ESA’s priority issues and for the positioning of Europe’s seed industry vis-à-vis EU and international bodies and decision makers. He is fluent in German, English and French.

Mathias Mondy

was educated as an agronomist engineer at the Institut National Agronomic Paris Grigon in France. Mr. Mondy started his career in Rhone-Poulenc Agro France in 1997.  He then proceeded to Aventis Environmental Science in the USA as a technical information manager. In 2002 Mr. Mondy joined Bayer Environmental Science in France first as a business intelligence manager then as a European marketing manager for professional products.

Since 2008 Mr. Mondy is working for the seed division of Bayer CropScience in the market acceptance team. In this position he is responsible for advocating the benefits of plant biotechnologies in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

He is participating to a number of public forums to raise the understanding of these technologies and their benefits for farmers, the food industry as well as for consumers. He is working with the seed industry for the creation of an enabling legislative environment allowing the development and commercialization of new crop varieties. One of his main targets is to promote sustainable agriculture as a mean to improve food security and mitigate agriculture’s impact on the environment.

Bayer CropScience, the subgroup of Bayer AG responsible for the agricultural business, has annual sales of EUR 7.255 billion (2011) and is one of the world’s leading innovative crop science companies in the areas of seeds, crop protection and non-agricultural pest control. 

Antonio Villarroel

Managing Director, GESLIVE, Spain

Antonio Villarroel is the Secretary General of ANOVE (“Spanish National Association of Plant Breeders”) and since 1996 is the General Manager and Lawyer of “GESLIVE, A.I.E.”, organization formed by the main breeders operating in Spain. 

GESLIVE deals with the enforcement and management of plant breeders’ rights and other intellectual property rights on plant materials (licenses, royalty collection, legal proceedings).

Previous professional experiences include being a Consultant in AGRAR Consulting, and a lawyer in Estudio Juridíco Serrano and Sacristan Dea & Associates. Mr. Villarroel has a Law Degree from Universidad Complutense of Madrid.  He has published several articles and given lectures on plant breeders’ rights.

Valeriy Khadzhymatov, Ph.D.

Khadzhymatov Valeriy has higher education, in 1984 he graduated Dnipropetrovsk Agricultural Institute, specialty – agriscientist.

He is a Master of agriculture with specialization in plant breeding and seed.

Khadzhymatov V.A. is a highly qualified expert with experience in business and management, initiative leader, able to implement the policy of Seed Association of Ukraine succussfully through the introduction of achievements of agricultural science. Author of 17 maize hybrids registered in the State Register of Plant Varieties suitable for dissemination in Ukraine. He is principled, consistent in decision-making, actively participates in drafting of laws and other legal acts in the field of plant breeding and seed production.
